Jean’s intrigue with clay started innocently with a class in “beginner pottery” at
the Westchester Art Workshop. Her fascination with learning to “throw” on the
wheel was captivating and persistent. However, life’s path took Jean on a
detour from clay as she pursued her career and raised children. Over the
years, the urge to work with clay stayed on the “ back burner”. Several years
ago, Jean answered the “call of clay” and, once again, is immersed in clay.
Her work is in white stoneware fired to cone 6 (2230 F.) in an electric kiln. For
Jean, functionality is prime so each piece is food safe made using safe glazes
that can be put into the microwave and dishwasher. Her desire is to enhance
the simple task of eating, serving meals, enjoying your favorite coffee or tea,
or filling a vase with flowers.
By using hand built parts and altering her wheelwork, she gives her work a
fresh feeling that is fun and functional while pleasing to both the hand and
eye. The impact of nature is clear along with her oriental sensibilities and
contemporary aesthetics. She is very excited and pleased as these
combinations come together: flower colors and shapes, beach textures and
rhythms.
