Working with clay is a process that enriches me and my interest is merely to
create esthetically pleasing pieces. Clay is a fascinating art medium. It is
strong, but pliable. It offers comfort as well as challenge. It is generally
stable, but its occasional unpredictability is engaging. Honest and
hardworking, clay is a friend who is always there. Clay is a gift from
Mother Earth. These qualities are what draw me to ‘play in the mud’ and
create works of art for fun and function.
I am in awe of ancient pottery from Japan, China, Greece and Africa but also
have an appreciation for contemporary forms. As a jewelry designer for
many years, I worked with natural gemstones and hand carved beads. The
colors and textures of those natural and man made works of art are still in
my mind’s eye, becoming apparent in much of my work. As it is an honor to
tribute classic artisans and their artwork, I am humbled by what has come
before and am excited about what will come next.
My concentration has been and will continue to be in hand building. I build
with clay slabs and coils, some with pressed in textures or hand carved
designs. These techniques enable me to work with the clay at a pleasurable
and peaceful pace. Each piece is perfectly imperfect and unique, although
many relate to each other in style, glaze, and firing method.
For those who choose to own one of my pieces, my wish is that it brings the
same peaceful pleasure into your home that it brought to me in its creation.
